Representative Matt Jones Advocates Local Control of Fracking
(Denver) – Speaking with radio host David Sirota this morning, State Representative Matt Jones talked about the importance of allowing cities and counties to manage their own land use issues, including oil and gas hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. “It’s good that we have the jobs and domestic energy production,” said Jones. “We just need to do that responsibly. We need to keep neighbors and kids safe. We also need to have local governments have a real voice in the process.”
“If a three-football-field long setback from a school is good enough for medical marijuana, it’s good enough for fracking,” said Jones, arguing that it makes no sense for state rules to allow a 350-foot setback from a school for fracking wells when state law requires a distance of 1000 feet for medical marijuana dispensaries.
The issue has become more visible lately because of a proposed fracking well located 350 feet from Trail Ridge Middle School in Longmont. Nearby, a current well has recorded benzene levels nearly 100 times the state standard.
Jones will introduce a bill this session that will strengthen the local control of fracking. “Land use control is the bread and butter of cities and counties” Jones said. “This is just another form of land use control, just like if they were putting in a cement factory which they could regulate.”
The bill will soon be introduced in the House.
